On Sunday evening our Care Group from our Sunday School class met at our house as we always do, and we had a warm time of conversation, prayer and fellowship. As the light grew dim I turned on a large flood light on the back of the shed/greenhouse so that the children on the trampoline would survive the night. Once the light went on, we saw five large spider webs spread out against the back of the building, each with its resident undertaker ready to do to work. The light immediately began to draw all manner of insects toward certain death, all of them becoming entangled in just one web. The web directly in front of the light was full of insects in just a few minutes while the four of equal size positioned all around it were empty. Well, isn't that interesting . . .
Many are we who claim the name of Jesus Christ, going through the motions of faith and service, while few are we who reap a harvest of souls for Him. We clamour about building and arranging and planning many things that yield little if anything in the way of eternal fruit for the Lord. If we are to be truly Great Commission Christians as we are commanded to be, then we should build and arrange and plan our lives in a way that places us in the glorious light of Christ's mission to redeem souls for His glory.
In all honesty, I didn't like the web analogy that I saw in my backyard because it was immediately convicting. How much of my life moves past the walking dead without giving them much thought at all? We are all constantly surrounded by perishing souls headed into a Christless eternity save for the witness of a faithful and obedient Christian. I want to be that witness. My prayer for myself is that the Holy Spirit will bring me to love the Son the way the Father does so that I may ache for the souls of the lost the way Jesus does. In so doing, perhaps the Lord may use me to share the sure hope of Jesus Christ with those whose hope is no more firm than a spider's web .
"Whose confidence is fragile, And whose trust a spider's web." Job 8:14

I thought that my job was to be faithful, pray, work, ... & let God reap where he decided it was good to reap. If I am responsible for the outcome as well as the effort, them woe is me.
(Or do I misunderstand you?)
Part of our walk with Jesus Christ is to be faithful, to pray and to work just as part of our walk is to make disciples. Too many of us have the 'being a disciple' part down in our own eyes while neglecting the command to 'make disciples.' I have not been the witness I should in this regard, but "I always want to want to." By His grace, I will be that witness.
